msdtc.exe

MSDTC.exe listening on port 5357 but DCOM port range restricted to 5000-5020

I've been having problems trying to get DTCPing.exe to work between 2 servers. I read this article and tried to troubleshoot the issue.

One of the suggestions to to run netstat -anob to determine what port DTCPIng.exe or msdtc.exe was listening on. When I run the command it says it's listening on port 5357, even though I have restricted the DCOM port range to 5000-5020 on both machines. (I have rebooted both machines, and my system admin says the firewall is open bidirectionally for ports 135, and the range 5000-5020)

Am I missing something? Shouldn't msdtc.exe be listening between the DCOM port range and not on port 5357?

msdtc.exe: When machine-wide tracing is enabled, where does ODBC store logs for NETWORKSERVICE?

When I enable machine-wide tracing in odbcad32.exe, it says:

However, it doesn't say where they'll be created. Presumably for normal users they'll be under %LOCALAPPDATA%, since that's the default path, but what about system users like NETWORKSERVICE, which the MS Distributed Transaction Services (msdtc.exe)?

We have a process that uses a number of resources to perform a complete operation.

When the process is not configured to use a distributed transaction using MSDTC the operation completes.

When the process is configured to use a distributed transaction using MSDTC the operation does not complete. MSDTC throws the following exception that indicates that MSDTC cannot connect via SSL.

msdtc.exe: When running odbcad32 as Administrator, machine-wide tracing still not available

I'm running the 64-bit odbcad32.exe on an x64 Windows 2008 R2 (6.1 build 7601 SP1) system. The system does not have UAC enabled (it's an AWS instance, and they default to UAC off).

The ODBC administrator does not think it's running under an Administrator account, even though it's running under the literal Administrator account. No other Admin-only tasks are causing problems.

The issue persists even if I (unecessarily) shift-right-click on the ODBC administrator and choose 'Run as A

msdtc.exe: Is it possible to programmatically get the server details from an ODBC DSN?

I'm working on some issues with psqlODBC's XA/MSDTC transaction handling and I find myself needing to obtain the server connection details (hostname, port, etc) from any user-supplied dsn programmatically without having psqlODBC invoked via the Driver Manager to do so.

Just parsed key/value string pairs will do; the problem is resolving user/system/file DSNs to get the underlying connection info.

The underlying issue I'm trying to solve is that a 32-bit application using MSDTC on a

explorer.exe: Is there a “Legal” API to exit explorer.exe?

I need to restart Windows Explorer from my custom installer, but the catch is that I can't simply 'kill its process' I need it to close 'gracefully' so that it saves its settings.

While doing a search I found out that Windows has this option covered. If you open up the Start menu, then Ctrl+Shift+Right-click on an empty space of the start menu, you'll see a context menu that gives you the 'Exit Explorer' command that does exactly what I need.

So I was wondering, is there an API to

vb6.exe: Comparing VB6.exes

We're going through a massive migration project at the minute and trying to validate the code that is deployed to the live estate matches the code we have in source control.

Obviously the .net code is easy to compare because we can disassemble. I don't believe this is possible in vb6 exes because of the manner of compilation.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I could validate the source code and the compiled executable matches the file I have in Live.

Thanks
