We have a Windows installer package, sample.msi. To install the package we are using

When we use /x it deletes all the files in the associated directory which is created. We want to retain all the contents in the directory. How is that possible?

When I try to install the new version 1.0.1, when my system already has the older version 1.0.0 installed, I am getting the error 2869.

But if I uninstall the older version manually & than try to install the newer version, then it installs successfuly.
It dawned on me that this error is due to some exception in custom action. And hence I executed the following command

msiexec.exe: WiX: Change MsiExec.exe error message (not Windows Installer error messages)

Is there a way to change error messages given by MsiExec in WiX?
My goal is to customize the message that appears when users try to install a patch without having the target product installed.

I have tried adding

to the UI section but it doesn't seem to work.

I suspect there is a big difference between Windows Installer errors and MsiExec errors.

sidebar.exe: Code Profiling in the Windows Sidebar Environment

Does anyone know of a way I can code-profile my Windows Sidebar Gadget?

I've played around with the code-profiling tool in IE8's 'Developer Tools' and the code-profiling included in Visual Studio 2010, but I can't find a way to include the System.* API, which my gadget relies on (as it is standard in the Sidebar environment). The gadget also relies on cross-domain AJAX requests; which is normally permitted in the Sidebar environment.

By code-profiling I primarily mean:

csrss.exe: make a windows 7 machine crash on BSOD

I'm trying to write a windows debug utility and I would need to automatically crash a Windows machine and make a Blue Screen Of Death appear.

I can obviously kill the csrss.exe process from the task manager, but the command TASKKILL /F /IM csrss.exe in a .bat file doesn't work.

Is there another way to make a Windows machine crash on bsod? Maybe some external library able to kill any process.

I would prefer to use a command line approach since I'm more familiar with it.

svchost.exe: ESET Firewall rules for svchost.exe and javaw.exe?

All firewall from ESET is good. You select the Interactive mode and you enjoy life. But here problem: custom rules are created only for specific executable files: firefox.exe, skype.exe, notepad++.exe. As a rule, one file is responsible for one application. More rare - several files are responsible for one application (Steam, for example). And with this firewall copes. But javaw.exe and svchost.exe can be responsible for several applications or services. How to create rules for specific services
