wmiprvse.exe

Why is a WPF TextBox sending wmiprvse.exe out of control?

I have been working on an application, and was trying to figure out why my CPU usage was hitting 80-100%.

I narrowed it down to the TextBox controls in my WPF page. It turns out that if I put focus on them it would start hammering the wmiprvse.exe process. This sent my overall CPU usage up to 100%.

I then created a test WPF application to see whether it may have been underlying code, or whether it is just the TextBox that is the culprit. Turns out, IT IS!

My test form only one text box, but as soon as I put focus on it to start editing some text, my CPU rockets to 100%.

Has anyone else experienced this problem, and do you know of any workaround?

Update

Well I have figured it out.

In another application I was using a ManagementEventWatcher. I was querying every second so I may have been creating a backlog somehow.

Here is a little sample of what I removed:

private ManagementEventWatcher processCreateWatcher = new ManagementEventWatcher();
processCreateWatcher.Query = new WqlEventQuery('__InstanceCreationEvent', interval, 'TargetInstance isa 'Win32_Process'');
processCreateWatcher.EventArrived += new EventArrivedEventHandler(processCreateWatcher_EventArrived);
processCreateWatcher.Start();

Next time I better be careful when using the Management id!

wmiprvse.exe: Pipe answer from tasklist to check mem usage of process and kill if exceeding threshold

I found a powershell version that does the job but it uses WMI and thats the process i have issue with, its leaking and hits the 512MB roof and stops working 'out of memory'.

wmiprvse.exe: SQL Server 2008 R2 - Can't open a connection

I can't connect to the server once I stop it. I have no idea why it does this. I uninstalled it and reinstalled it which resolved the issue but now, after stopping it again I can't restart it.

There are 2 issues I'm having, one in the SQL Server Management Studio and one in the SQL Server Configuration Manager.

SQL Server Configuration Manager has an error in the SQL Server Services part:

wmiprvse.exe: Want to script Windows WMI (wmiprvse.exe) to release handle on file

I'm working with a VB Script file written by someone else that uses Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) calls to check on the status of several Windows Services. This script runs every few minutes on set schedule. I need to upgrade/replace the .exe for those services.

I stop the VB Script, stop the services, and uninstall the services so they no longer appear in the Services panel (services.msc). Unfortunately, WMI (wmiprvse.exe) still has a handle on the service .exe files. I ca

drwtsn32.exe: Post-mortem .Net debugging

Added a .Net component (C#, COM interop) to an old VB6 application. The old application crashes sometimes (access violation), before and after the change. The difference however is that the post-mortem debugger (i.e. drwtsn32.exe) is not started anymore.
Catching the error in C# is not an option as the bug is not part of the .Net call stack, so MyHandler is not triggered either:

AppDomain currentDomain = AppDomain.CurrentDomain;
currentDomain.UnhandledException += new UnhandledExcep

eudora.exe: How to log all API calls in Windows the same way Wine does in Linux?

Im debugging a windows application in Linux using wine (Eudora), using WINEDEBUGGER=+relay to create a (rather massive) log of API calls. Now that I've spotted where the problem is, I want to run the same application in native windows (well, actually VirtualBox), so see how it behaves and compare the differences (if any).

I know there are several windows tools that can trace API calls, but i need one that can generate the same kind of log as wine does, so I can use the same workflow:

ymsgr: Yahoo invisible

Some friends with the help of various sites check and know when i'm invisible on yahoo messenger and keep bragging about this.

Being curious about this I've tested lots of sites that check if a user is invisible on yahoo messenger and all of them sent me a C1 packet type.
From what i've tested I'm(my ymsgr client) not sending anything back. So i only receive 1 packet from the bot that performs the check and that's it, they know if i'm invisible or not.

Next i thought that

vb6.exe: VB6 exe error 'Invalid Picture'

This is a bit of a grey-area question, so I'll try both here and Server Fault...

I have a utility app, built with VB6. I no longer have source for the app. The utility was last used successfully on Sunday morning. When attempting to run the app this morning, I get an error dialog complaining about 'Invalid Picture'. On a second and third server, the app works as intended.

The install of the app has not changed. As I don't have full control over the server, it is possible patches ha

w3wp.exe: Is there a memory limit for w3wp.exe?

Is there a max memory size for w3wp.exe? Mine is getting up to about 2.5-3G then seems to crash/reset.

Per the 'GIVEN' dimensions below I setup some counters and noticed that the w3wp.exe will service http requests then reset to 0 along with the w3wp.exe process crashing (changing pids). As a result REQUESTS_QUEUED and ACTIVE_REQUESTS grow large causing delays in processing until the w3wp.exe can restart itself. It's doing this every 3-4min so more than likely due to heavy system volume
