splwow64.exe

Debugging/troubleshooting windows applications without source code

A few days back I faced this problem at work and I was wondering is there a way to mint out more data from the scenario than to go to Microsoft. There has been many cases like this and I wanted to explore that as a windows developer what is the best /optimum way to fetch most of info is such case. I ll describe the situation:

1) An office application, while printing with certain settings ,involving cmyk color space, throws up a dialog box error which has a bad description.'File %s could not be opened because it is locked by some other application'. It does not give a file name nor does the event viewer. Printing is aborted.

2) on using 'procmon', we find 'file locked error' on several files when the api 'CreatefileMapping' is called by involved processes like the office app, the spooler , the splwow64.exe(yes its a 64 bit system and the app is 32 bit).

3) the problem is not there when there is no splwow64 is involved, means using 64 bit app on 64 bit os.

I want to know that which tools will be useful for getting more info in such situations. This includes use of MS symbols with windbg and debugging assembly if needed. Basically i need the file name that is locked , which is shown as %s and the root of the problem.

Thanks,
Kaushik

splwow64.exe: Faulting application splwow64.exe

I am running windows 7 64 pro. When I start VMWare player, with windows XP service pack 3 installed, I get the error message 'this application has requested runtime to terminate it in an unusual way' Microsoft visual c++. I have dug into the event log and it is telling me that splwow64.exe is the faulting application. I was concerned at first but now that I know that it is a 32 bit print spooler it does not seem like such a big deal but it is annoying. Any thoughts on how to correct the problem?

splwow64.exe: How to properly install virtual printer using WinAPI on Win x64?

I am trying to install virtual printer from C++ console program using WinAPI calls. It works fine on Windows XP, but on Windows 7 x64 there are some processes which lock files in system folders, required for install. I think they appear only on x64 Windows systems, but I haven't tested it with Windows XP x64.

These are processes splwow64.exe and PrintIsolationHost.exe. I tried to kill them programmaticly and it turns out well (well, for terminating PrintIsolationHost.exe I've set a Debug

The real issue comes now: Quite exactly 30 seconds later the Visual Studio JIT Debugger selection dialog comes up.

wmiprvse.exe: Why is a WPF TextBox sending wmiprvse.exe out of control?

I have been working on an application, and was trying to figure out why my CPU usage was hitting 80-100%.

I narrowed it down to the TextBox controls in my WPF page. It turns out that if I put focus on them it would start hammering the wmiprvse.exe process. This sent my overall CPU usage up to 100%.

I then created a test WPF application to see whether it may have been underlying code, or whether it is just the TextBox that is the culprit. Turns out, IT IS!

I start debugging , attach to the inetinfo.exe process and refresh the page in the browser so the page reloads and reruns the server side code. Non of the breakpoints get hit. There's no warnings around the breakpoints to alert me to an issue.
